About one-third of the animals in Middle Georgia shelters are purebred, and they’re being put to sleep almost every day.
“You’d be surprised at the number of purebreds we get. And I really don’t know the reason why, because I know people spend good money on those animals.” - Officer VanDeWalker, Macon Animal Control
Animal Control officers say they aren’t picking up the purebreds on the side of the road. They say the dog’s owners drop them off themselves.
“Once in awhile they’ll offer an excuse why it’s being dropped off - they’re moving out of state, they’re moving into an apartment where they can’t have a pet.” - Officer VanDeWalker, Macon Animal Control
Other times, the pet owners don’t say anything at all. VanDeWalker says he thinks people often buy pets without thinking about the responsibilites that come with the purchase - and that that’s why so many dogs and cats are abandoned.
“It’s a member of the family, and you should treat it like that. There is an expense involved, but it pays back in spades, because that animal will love you back.” - Officer VanDeWalker, Macon Animal Control
The Macon Animal Shelter only has room for about 65 dogs and cats. That’s why it has to euthanize so many animals each year. If you’re interested in adopting a pet from the shelter, just call the shelter at 751-9200.
